Meeting Nancy Albertz-Schmidt

What a brave, adventuresome lady! Nancy was born in Atlanta, Georgia, but grew up here in Florida, where she’s lived all her life, in St. Petersburg and Lake Worth. She moved to the Town of Jupiter in 1985 and, like me, recalls Indiantown Road as a two-lane road.

Nancy is proudest of her two daughters. Her oldest is a teacher in the Martin County school district, where she teaches chemistry and physics at Jensen Beach High, and her younger daughter graduated from the Culinary Institute in West Palm and currently lives near Naples and, of course, works in the culinary world.

She considers herself a late bloomer because at the tender age of 40 she decided to go back to school in 1995 — this not knowing that 10 years later she would have a Doctorate in Pharmacy. Nancy enrolled and was accepted into the School of Pharmacy at Palm Beach Atlantic University in 2001 and graduated in 2005. Currently she is a pharmacy manager for Walgreens, and a Registered Pharmacist in Florida and North Carolina. When asked how difficult a task this was, she said, “Oh, the hardest thing: the studying, the chemistry classes, and the drugs. So many of the drugs have similar names, look alike and sound alike, so it’s a challenge. Also, checking prescriptions and dosages. I may get a prescription with the dosage entirely wrong, so I have to know to correct that so that the patient gets the best care.” This past weekend she celebrated her 10-year class reunion as the first graduating class in Pharmacology at PBAU. Along with her husband Fred, she celebrated by spending the weekend on Palm Beach and dining out and about on Clematis.

Nancy’s birthday is Christmas day! This year she will turn 61 and is at the height of her life.

Fun and relaxing time finds them at the beach, doing yoga at Loggerhead Fitness, of course. Her next big goal is to learn how to WINDSURF, of all things!

Nancy also appreciates the ability to travel. She took one of her daughters, Jaimie, to Paris, France and London. They also went on an Alaskan land cruise (land and sea). Next summer Fred and Nancy are planning a Mediterranean cruise with the FPA (Florida Pharmacy Association) where one is able to obtain continuing education credits for cruising and learning. Not bad for classwork.

What’s next? Nancy recently attended a health fair at Palm Beach Atlantic University where she administered more than 50 shots to patients who wouldn’t have necessarily found their way to the doctor’s office. With and for Walgreens, Nancy is an immunizer. For this reason Nancy wants to bring this service to Loggerhead Fitness and she’s currently in talks to make this happen. Insurances will be accepted and/or vouchers can be provided for non-insurance carriers. Medicare part B pays for this entirely as well. Stay tuned for dates and times.

In her off time, Nancy has been a member of a local women’s organization, Jupiter BPW (Business and Professional Women) since 2006. As a member, she attends monthly meetings and is involved in raising funds for scholarship monies for local girls. Just recently, Nancy hosted a fundraiser in her home called Women Who Dine. Attendees raised over $500, half of the funds will go towards the scholarship fund and the other half will go to a local charity.

Say hello when you next see her — she is charismatic, fun-loving, adventurous, and always friendly to boot!
