Kris Landers is originally from Wall Township, New Jersey, but attended the University of Kentucky in Lexington on a full scholarship to run track and field. He shared, “While I was at Kentucky, I managed to run a 4:04 mile and a 1:47 half mile (800m) and became an All American. I also qualified for the Olympic Trials in 2004 — but broke my tibia one week before the trials, shattering any dreams I had of running faster or possibly making an Olympic team.”
LHF: So how did you find Loggerhead Fitness?
KL: I was a member at Gold’s Gym, but it was way too loud and crowded for me. I wanted to find a gym that was more low key; I found Loggerhead Fitness and absolutely loved the place. I love fitness. I went to school for Kinesiology Exercise Science. I like to go to the gym five days a week when I am in town.
LHF: What do you do for work?
KL: I am a freelance underwater photographer and I also teach FII free diving courses. The level 1 course I teach is a highly effective 1.5 day plan and it covers everything from safety and problem management, breathing techniques and equipment selection, to correct free diving methods for gradual depth progression. This provides divers with a solid foundation to free dive confidently and safely up to depths of 66 feet/20 meters, with breath holds up to three minutes.
LHF: Sounds intense! I have a lot of friends who free dive in the Bahamas to catch fish. If I were to recommend it to them, what will people learn from this course?
KL: You’ll learn a lot!
– Safety and Problem Management For Free Diving
– Static Apnea Technique Development
– Confined Water Rescue and Buddy Supervision Techniques
– Introduction To Free Diving Specific Equipment
– Basic Physics and Physiology For The Level 1 Free Diver
– Free Diving Technique Development
– Correct Breathing For Free Diving
– Equalization Techniques For The Level 1 Free Diver
– Open Water Rescue Skills, Buddy Supervision and Self Evaluation
The name of the company I teach for is called FII, AKA Freediving Instructors International
LHF: And you do that here in town?
KL: Actually, I get to travel all over the place. It has brought me to Honduras, Belize, Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos, Panama, Mexico and The Bahamas.
LHF: It’s nice to be able to partner your work with your passions. What’s on tap in your downtime?
KL: On the weekends I like to be on the ocean and hang out with my friends.
LHF: What other hobbies do you have?
KL: I am addicted to spear fishing and taking photos of my buddies with the fish they’ve shot. I also really enjoy surfing when we get waves here in Florida.
